Experiencing Las Fallas: Erasmus+ students immersed in the Valencian festival

Every year, the Falla Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) opens its doors to international students, offering them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live the Fallas as true Valencians. More than just a local festivity, the Fallas are a cultural phenomenon recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. They combine tradition, art, satire, pyrotechnics, and community in a celebration that transforms the city of Valencia each March.

For many international students, joining the UPV Falla is their first step into the heart of this Valencian tradition. They are welcomed into the casal fallero (the local community space), where they share meals, learn about the history and symbolism of the Fallas, and participate in activities such as making decorations, dressing in traditional attire, or even joining the pasacalles (street parades).

The UPV Falla experience goes far beyond being a spectator—it allows students to actively participate in rituals like the plantà, where the monumental artistic structures are assembled, or the ofrenda de flores, the moving floral tribute to the Virgin of the Desamparados. They also get to feel the adrenaline of the mascletàs, spectacular daytime firework shows that fill the air with sound and rhythm, and witness the climax of the festivities, the cremà, when the beautifully crafted monuments are set ablaze in a powerful act of renewal.

By sharing these moments side by side with Valencian students and members of the community, international students gain a deeper understanding of local culture, forging friendships and memories that last well beyond their stay in Spain. The UPV Falla initiative is not only a cultural immersion program but also a bridge that connects people from around the world with one of the most iconic traditions of Valencia.
